Provence, et le sud de France

We took the TGV to Aix-en-Provence, then rented a car. Drove first to a place called Beau de Provence. This was basically an old castle of a hill, but the view was great.

In Arles, the streets were completely empty... off season apparently. The town has a very old feel... quiet, with narrow streets. It was almost creepy, very cool. We stayed at the Hotel Gauguin.

This is the famous cafe painted by Van Gogh in his "Cafe at Night". We went here to eat, and I didn't realize this was the same place until after I looked at the cover of the menu.

A comparison between the cafe and the painting. It still looks almost exactly the same.

These are typical streets in Arles. Narrow streets, old stone buildings with shuttered windows, old paint, etc.

A couple nice statues... this placque to Van Gogh is pretty funny. He is missing one ear, and he also has a very manic look on his face.

This is a Roman statue at the Musee des Antiquities Roman, in Arles.

Another comparison: this is the site where Van Gogh's "Yellow House" was. Apparently it was destroyed in the war, but the building behind it is basically the same.

After Arles we drove around Provence to a bunch of little villages on mountains. This is Tim at a cafe in ..., where the movie "The Swimming Pool" was filmed.

This is a photo of the harbour at Cassis... it was a little rainy.

This is a view from the top of the Calanques, some mountains on the Mediterranean at Cassis... Tim went swimming at this beach, but I was still sick so I didn't go in the water.

This is at the beach in Cassis. Let's just say, a more "liberal" attitude about beach attire...

This is from our hotel window at night... nice colors in this photo.

This is another beach at Cassis. My first time swimming in the Mediterranean. It was warm that day.

Tim at the cafe in the morning.

A photo from the atelier de Cezanne a Aix-En-Provence (i.e. Cezanne's studio).
