Rome is huge. It was tiring walking all over the place. Try to count the churches in this photo... there was a church on every corner practically. In this photo, you can see St. Peter's Basilica in the distance. That's the Vatican. |
A couple of photos at the Colleseum.
This is Trevi Fountain. You are supposed to throw a coin over your shoulder for good luck. I did this, but it misfired and I think I must have hit some tourist with the coin. There were tons of tourists here and all over Rome.
Bernini's sculpture of "David" at Galleria Villa Borghese. I was pretty impressed by this one, and also other marble sculptures at this museum.
This is Palatine, i.e. the really old part of Rome. Mostly ruins, but pretty interesting. This is a view from the back of Il Vittoriano. |
My favorite place in Rome is this cool looking building: The Pantheon. It is really amazing and very impressive to look at.
This is the Pantheon at night. There were always lots of people here at night, hanging out at the fountain, listening to these street musicians who played jazz, etc. Also, a photo from inside: the tomb of Raphael.
This is the inside of the Pantheon. There is actually an open hole in the dome, and so it rains inside. There are small holes in the floor where the water drains out.
This is the fountain at the Pantheon. You can see a tiny bit of yellow behind one of the awnings in the background. You guessed it... that's McDonald's. |
One interesting thing about Rome is the way that the ancient Roman structures are sort of integrated in with the more modern buildings in the city.
This is the fountain at Piazza Navona.
This is a couple views of Il Vittoriano. I liked the look of this building. It is basically the biggest structure in the city, and was designed specifically to be on the same scale as St. Peter's.
Some more shots taken at Il Vittoriano. |
Palazzo Venezia. This building on the left is where Mussolini gave some of his famous speeches. I think he spoke from that balcony, but I am not sure.
Here is a couple of photos of me and Tim eating an overpriced and not very exceptional lunch in the vicinity of Piazza Farnese.
A view from inside St. Peter's. This is after we had just seen the Sistene Chapel, a major tourist madhouse. "Can you see the light?"
This is the altar in the Vatican at St. Peter's. I think this is where the Pope gives his sermons from... pretty extravagant. |
Discovered this cat just outside the walls of the Vatican, trying to sleep. This is basically how I felt at this time... exhausted. I tried petting the cat a couple times, but he kept swatting at me.
This is the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere. Trastevere was one of our favorite places to hang out, especially at night. There are lots of cafes, restaurants, bookshops, and generally a nice atmosphere. It was sort of almost relaxing.
The interior of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere during a service.
Here's a couple more shots of the interior of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere.
On our last day in Rome, we went to San Lorenzo, which is supposed to be an up-and-coming artsy area. We didn't really find much of anything to do there and it seemed like a slum, but he hung out in this park and read for a while. I was reading Dostoyevsky at the time: "The Gambler". |
On this wall it says "Lazio merda". Lazio is the big rival to Rome in football, from what I understand. So this is like the Roman equivalent of "Yankees suck".
This is a photo of a couple of chicks who were hanging out at the fountain in front of Santa Maria... I thought this girl was sort of interesting looking.
